Grendel is basically the First Yeti. The Ur-Yeti.
He's a big, clawed bestial humanoid who lives in a cave lair and preys on people. He's a lone outsider.
It's easy to draw a line between him and other fictional characters such as the Grinch or Wampa (even loses an arm to the hero!).
