Not Yeti Friday - Skunk Ape

On his blog Hotwax Mealworms, Colin Panetta occasionally adds to his Cryptid Portrait Series. The above is his illustration of the Florida Skunk Ape, a hairy hominid sighted in the Southeastern United States.

Photos alleged to be that of the Skunk Ape were discovered by cryptozoologist Loren Coleman to be developed at an Eckerd photo lab within two miles of the artist.

Yetisburg Update

Update on the Yetisburg card game from James Davis, Art Director for Paizo Publishing:

"Hey, here is the Rebel Yeti card from our new Yetisburg game. The
game is almost complete now, and we'll be sending it off to press in
the next few days."

I like that the yeti changes sides if hit by friendly fire. You really can't blame those Canadian mercenary yeti for defecting.

Wonder Woman vs. Yeti?

This picture for Wonder Woman # 14 was floating around the 'Nets, and I got my hopes up that the Amazing Amazon was battling a whole army of Yeti!

But then I looked into it, and it appears the above depicts Wonder Woman actually battling enhanced gorilla youths from Gorilla City.

In fact, the picture may have just been a conceptual painting, and it was later decided the youths shouldn't be naked and colored in blues and whites (very yeti-ish), but clothed in futuristic armor with warm brownish gray shading instead. Here's the more recent cover design:

And from what I can tell from panels inside the comic, there are no white-haired, naked yetis in the story, just grayish-brown, armored gorilla youths from Gorilla City, albeit enhanced gorilla youths.

Ah well. One day we'll see that match-up. And it will be the showdown of showdowns.

A year ago I didn't know who to credit for the great scarfed yeti in this post.

But now I do! It's rebel-penguin.

And he's got two great pieces starring the same yeti (click to see bigger).

Awesome.

Not Yeti Friday - Treeson

According to its creator Hong Kong illustrator Bubi Au Yeung...

Treeson is a "kind creature and brought up by the trees in forest."

I can tell you the exact date of Treeson's birth (when Bubi Au Yeung conceived of the creature):

August 8th, 2005

Treeson started in an illustrated story, and soon starred in many more.

Treeson was released as a vinyl toy the next year and look at all the awards the figure won!

  • Format Magazine's Top 10 Designer Toys of 2006
  • toysrevil's top 6 vinyl toys of 2006
  • Plastic and Plush's Toy of the Year for 2006

    Bubi Au Yeung made neat cards.

    Treeson fandom is alive and well!:

    Yeti Anagrams

    I discovered that Abominable Snowman is an anagram for... (click here to find out)!

    But what other anagrams exist? I found four online.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Type II Diabetes
                 =
    I eat yeti bipeds.
    by Judson T. Pewther
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Is it the abominable snowman?
                              =
    White baboon? Last simian men?

    by Tom Myers

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Leicester City
                 =
    Electric Yetis
    by Unknown
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    I Got You, Babe
                 =
    Yeti Bugaboo

    by Roy R. Pryor

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And the word 'yetis' by itself has two anagrams:
    seity: A quality peculiar to oneself.
    yites: European yellow-hammers (birds)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman inspired this post when I read on his blog about a famous anagram controversy involving another cryptid - The Loch Ness Monster.

    In a cryptozoology news round-up in the last week of November 2006, Coleman discusses Sir Peter Scott, a well-known British ornithologist, conservationist, painter, and later in life, a supporter of the search for the Loch Ness Monster:

    "After several successful 1970s photographic and sonar findings by the Academy of Applied Sciences, Sir Peter announced in 1975 that the scientific name of the monster would henceforth be Nessiteras rhombopteryx, which is Greek for 'The Ness monster with diamond-shaped fin.' This allegedly enabled Nessie to be added to a British register of officially protected wildlife, although that is disputed today. Ridicule followed quickly when London newspapers noted that Nessiteras rhombopteryx is an anagram of "monster hoax by Sir Peter S." Nessie searcher and cryptozoologist Robert H. Rines replied that the letters could also be rearranged to spell: 'Yes, both pix are monsters–R.'"

    To recap:

    Nessiteras rhombopteryx
                           =
    Monster Hoax by Sir Peter S.
                           =
    Yes, both pix are monsters. – R.

    I love it!

    Not Yeti Friday - Druid: Werebear & Warden Archon

    A person called ShadowButcher has compiled an archive of concept art from the PC game, Diablo II.

    The above image of of a "Druid: Werebear".

    Turns out the designers didn't run with this particular concept art, making their were-bears in the actual game look decidedly un-yeti-ish. Thusly, I proclaim it NOT YETI.

    I found a guide online that explains how to make a druid character in Diablo II that can turn into a were-bear. Proud of me?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Book of Exalted Deeds is a D&D guide to things that are good (...good as in the alignment - as in NOT EVIL).
    The book introduces the "Warden Archon", depicted above by Mark Nelson. It looks like an armored were-bear. Or possibly an armored yeti if you squint your eyes. It is apparently a very good and very powerful creature that guards things.
    Verdict: NOT YETI.
    I have done my service to my country today.
    Note: I tried looking for more images of were-bears, but one on such a quest gets quickly into Furry territory, and no offense to Furries, but that's just not my thing.
    MTS Yeti
    Manitoba Telecom Services Inc., or MTS, is the primary telecommunications carrier in the Canadian province of Manitoba.
    They are using a yeti as a spokesperson to sell their mobile phones and mobile phone accessories.
    As you can tell by this commercial, the yeti is a deliberate parody of Bumble from the Rudolph special.
    The Canadians love affair with the yeti intensifies.
    Perhaps, in the case of Manitoba, it is because the province is in the shape of a yeti's head in profile. Observe:
    Is your state or province in the shape of a yeti? Write in and let me know!
    Coffman Yeti (and Unicorns)
    Artist David Coffman was distracted one day and drew Yeti and Unicorns.
    Note: A modern but apparently incorrect term for a winged unicorn is alicorn from the Latin "alatus" meaning winged. You may be safer calling it Pegasoi Aithiopes.
    Bender's Big Yeti
    The Futurama movie "Bender's Big Score" features yeti.
    Here is the scene in question.
    From the film's IMDB Quotes page:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    [Everyone is huddled in a giant rock igloo on Neptune after the scammer aliens have taken over the Earth]

    Bender: Rrrrr... it's so cold, my processor is running at peak efficiency!

    Leela: What are you, a whining machine? If you want to worry about something, worry about the Yetis.

    Zoidberg: Jedis?

    [a chorus of howling Yetis is heard from a distance]

    Zoidberg: Oh... YETIS!

    Professor Farnsworth: Amy - you speak Yeti - what are they saying?

    Amy Wong: I'm not sure, but it sounds like something to do with... assaulting the interlopers!

    [a trio of giant Yetis smashes through the side of the rock igloo; everyone screams and scatters while Leela runs towards them]

    Leela: Yeee-ah! Don't mess with me you ice-crapping snow honkys. I just got dumped!

    [the Yetis flee in terror as Leela chases after them with a primitive spear]

    Hermes Conrad: Sweet Yeti of the Serengeti! She's gone crazy Eddie in the heady!

    Not Yeti Friday - The Ultrahumanite

    I've blogged about him before, but he's worth another mention.

    The Ultrahumanite is the first ever super-villain mad scientist, going up against Superman in 1939. He's also the first transexual super-villain. To survive death, he put his brain in the body of a woman.

    Most recently he's taken on a yeti-like form. Technically, he's a genetically modified albino gorilla.

    This guy used the yeti doll from G.I. Joe to make a custom figure:

    Ultrahumanite, you are an honorary yeti. This I say.

    C.O. Bigelow in NYC, the oldest pharmacy in America, decorated its window display in 2006 with a yeti to express the holiday spirit.

    Kalinauskas Yeti

    "Captn. Yeti" by Matthew Kalinauskas is nice and Simpsonsesque.

    The yeti was drawn for the artist's yearbook page on the occasion of his final year at the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Ontario, Canada.

    Yeti Wip

    Wacky Packages are a series of trading cards featuring parodies of American consumer products.

    Recently, this image by Smokin' Joe McWilliams was produced as a sticker in the series:

    A bit of trivia:

    One of the stickers in 1985 was a parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids. Topps liked what they saw and asked the artist to begin creating idea sketches and paintings for a new sticker series based on it. Thus, the Garbage Pail Kids were born.

    Abominable Snowfamily

    Abominable Snowpeople Family print is available for purchase on Etsy.

    Only SEVEN dollars.

    Illustrator Ryan Berkley hit this one out of the park.

    He asks:

    "Does anything warm your heart more than a loving Abominable Snowperson family?"

    Ryan, my heart has gotten heartily warmed by this family's cold, distrusting stares.

    I featured Ryan's "Fighting Sasquatch Brothers" in a post last month.
