Abraham SuperLincoln, the Yeti, and a kid all enjoy books

Adam Rex (who drew tiny yeti) made a new image that is available as a poster and as a t-shirt.

You can view this lovely picture really big.

If you look closely, you'll notice all three are reading about kites.

For One Night, Unite in Being Yeti

If you're planning on being a yeti for Halloween this year, please take a picture of yourself in costume and send it to me.

You will be joining with the small number of (genius-minded) people the world over who are also adopting the likeness of the Abominable One. Let's get more yeti out there on the streets that night, people!

Need inspiration? Take a look at what others have done.

And here are some more ideas.

Frosted Friends Collection

Lemon Cadet (whose Yeti Loves Seamonster was previously blogged about) wrote to tell me about some new baby clothes at Old Navy called the Frosted Friends Collection.

Pretty cute, but they're gendered too much to exclude girls, unfortunately.

Thanks, Lemon Cadet!

Mastodon Yeti

There's this heavy metal band called Mastodon. And there's this company called Ding Life that will put Mastodon related imagery as "skins" on your portable computing devices and mobile phones.

So Mastodon has a related imagery of a yeti fighting a saber-toothed tiger.

And that's what I got.

Winner of the Biggest Thing to Happen to Yeti...

The biggest thing to happen to yeti in popular culture in recent times is the new Mummy movie. It's the first time a yeti has appeared in a major live-action film (and a summer tentpole picture to boot).

Many reviews cite the yetis as the only redeeming feature of the film. Perhaps this will encourage other filmmakers to include Abominable Snowmen in their cast.

Here's a close-up look at this important yeti.

Note that it is really more bear-like than ape-like.

Snow Yeti

Tamie Snow of Roxycraft is responsible for a number of Knitted Dolls like the above yeti.

She has also created an Embroidery Pattern of yeti as well.

Not Yeti Friday - Igoo the Rock Ape

It is said the Tibetan word "yeti" means 'rock bear'. But yeti is usually depicted as more ape than bear, so it should really be 'rock ape'.

There is actually a famous Rock Ape in popular culture.

Igoo the Rock Ape from the 1960's Saturday morning cartoon show, The Herculoids.

Igoo was a good guy, one of the Herculoids. His rock skin was impenetrable and he was pretty strong.

Igoo and the Herculoids were created by the GENIUS GOD Alex Toth. I previously blogged about Toth and his Snowmen.

Monsterology Yeti

There is a popular series of books for kids called Ologies. There's Dragonology, Wizardology, Pirateology, Mythology, and Spyology. I would have totally gone ga-ga happy over these as a child. These were my absolute favorite subjects back then (okay still are). I should have been born 8 years ago; I would be in hog heaven right now with the amount of fantasy books that are out. Where were all these fantasy books when I was a kid and didn't enjoy reading anything because there was nothing out there to enjoy? In my day, the closest we got to Harry Potter was a lame choose-your-own adventure book about a cave with maybe a dragon in it... and that was only if you chose to go there!. Oops! I never made it to pg. 32. No dragon for you!!

But I digress.

The most recent Ology book, Monsterology has a section about the yeti, and here's a scan of the lovely illustration:

Some interesting, previously unknown information about the yeti is divulged:

  • Yeti's scientific name is Ursus saxum.

This means 'Rock Bear' in Latin. This actually makes sense considering that the word yeti is believed to be derived from the Tibetan word for "rock bear".

    ----
  • "It is disputed whether these denizens of the Himalayas are descended from bears or apes."

I had no idea anyone had ever disputed this.

    ----
  • "Hair colour changes from brown in summer to pure white in winter."

Ah-ha! That explains why we see both brown and white yetis!

    ----
  • "Forms of attack: Teeth, claws; crushing with arms."

Well, this is old news really. I just like the way they put it. And yeah, I would have added staves to the list, but that's just me.

    ----

    And the most revelatory:
  • "Female yetis can only be distinguished from the males by their habit of twisting their whiskers into elaborate curls."

    !!!!!!!

    ----

AMAZING the amount of new information Monsterology has unveiled for the field of Fictional Yeti Scholarship.

A cool blog & Indiana Jones

I direct your attention to the blog Please Do Not Spin The Moon and its post about yeti in comics.

Look at the Indiana Jones comic cover! What a find!

Well, I couldn't be outdone by this discovery... so I found this:

Indiana Jones and the Giants of the Silver Tower was a 1984 choose-your-own-adventure type book by a young R.L. Stine (long before his Goosebumps series).

Yeti and Indiana Jones go together like a horse and carriage.

    Questions?
