The look of Chewbacca was inspired by the cover of a 1975 Analog sci-fi magazine that depicted the alien race called Jaenshi from a short story by George R. R. Martin of Game of Thrones fame.
These guys weren't nice like Wookiees. Definitely 'He Loves Me Not'.
