Rise of the Guardians

Back in November, I discussed the Yeti in William Joyce's Nicholas St. North book -  part of his  Guardians of Childhood series. Coming November 21, 2012, there will be a new, family-friendly Dreamworks 3D-animated movie based on the series, and the trailer reveals there will be YETI!

Here's the trailer:

These Yetis look to me like a cross between an Ewok, the Lorax, and maybe the Doctor Who Abominable Snowman.

Anyway, this is an historic moment.

Unless something unexpected happens, I expect that this inclusion of Yeti in a big holiday movie will be the biggest Yeti news of the year.   Let's see if anything else can top it! *

And I think this will be the first time that there is a mainstream piece of entertainment that pairs Yeti with Santa Claus since Bumble's debut in the 1964 Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer TV special.  I mean, people are constantly making references to Bumble and Santa, but based on their look, I'd say Rise of the Guardians' use of the Yeti is a brand new thing that isn't trying to pay direct homage.

* Note: Just remembered that this year it was revealed on the Simpsons that Moe's father was the Yeti.  That is definitely a contender for top Yeti news.
