Not Yeti Friday - Gigas

From the Wikipedia entry: "List of Ultraman Monsters":
"First Appearance: Episode 25 'Rogue Comet Cyphon'"

"Gigas (or Gigass) was 39 meters tall and weighed 15,000 tons, with a design and character very similar to that of the legendary yeti. Gigas was a natural creature who lived in the mountains of Japan until the comet Cyphon (Tsuiphon) pass close towards Earth's orbit, causing the giant to reveal himself."

"At the same time and location, the Science Patrol were searching for six missing nuclear weapons that could accidentally go off. After being chased by Gigas, they then encountered the comet's own native monster Dorako. The two monsters soon met with one another and fought for hours until a third beast, the violent Red King, who unfortunately has also eaten the said missing bombs, appears and easily defeats them both. After Red King kills Dorako by tearing off his wings, Gigas fled the scene, only to be destroyed soon afterwards by a new weapon developed by the Science Patrol."

Scooby-Doo Yeti

I found some screenshots from the 2007 feature-length animated film "Chill Out, Scooby-Doo!". Here is what the yeti from it looks like close-up:

White hair and blue face like Bumble. But very bestial.

Scooby-Doo and gang have gone up against the Abominable Snowman before. In 2006, I blogged about an episode from classic Scooby called "That's Snow Ghost" and then in 2007 about one of the covers of the Scooby comic book series, which features an even more bestial yeti. Recently, I blogged about Scott Jeralds's cover too.

I think that the continued popularity of Scooby-Doo and the yeti come from the same place. We like our solitary, unknowable monsters haunting their icy caves or their broken-down amusement parks. We like our intrepid explorers sneaking around their lairs, risking all to get chased and possibly eaten by the frightening monsters. There's always the possibility the explorers will unmask the monsters, take away their power. They may not be monsters after all. They may just be the common, the knowable, the natural - just a person, with human foibles and desires: a base criminal, a greedy old man, a friend in disguise trying to keep people away to protect a noble cause. We want our monsters to make us afraid, and then we want our meddlers, our tricksters, to take the fear away.

I like the effect he evokes with the light, the snow, the scale. Icy breath is a nice touch.

Making Faces

Mummy 3 will probably be remembered mostly for its yeti.

Chris Gun was the concept artist for the film, and on his blog, he has been posting production art from it.

These are a set of facial expressions he created for the animators to draw from:

You can see these bigger here.

I've read a main inspiration for the yetis' design were these cute guys:

And two years later after the film, James Cameron's Avatar featured a race of limber, leaping CGI cat people.

Are CAT-PEOPLE "in" right now?

(Answer: yes.)

Does this mean there is going to be a revival of the musical "CATS" but done with a bunch of YETIS instead?

(Answer: no.)

Cosma Yeti Crab

A lovely digital painting of the yeti crab by Mr. Oscar Cosma.

---

P.S. The yeti crab has been getting a lot of press lately because the Census of Marine Life announced this week that their final report will be released on October 4, 2010 (about 8 months from now). Although it will feature 5,000 newly discovered ocean creatures, the yeti crab is the clear star of the show. It gets mentioned in every article about the Census, front and center. I expect this recent resurgence in awareness to inspire a whole new generation (how often is there a new generation again?) to venerate the beautiful kiwa hirsuta in art and song.

Narboo Yeti

A reader writes:
There's a painter/guerrilla artist here in Seattle who goes by Narboo. Two of his (many) characters are a yeti and a bigfoot.

Here is a painting I commissioned from him, of a snowboarding yeti:

Here is a Flickr gallery of his art around town:

Here is his Flickr account.

Cheers,
Val
Ah, yes. I see what you mean.

Thanks, Val!

Abbott Yeti

Illustrator Greg Abbott (flickr portfolio) does so many yetis in his work that I look through his portfolio and I go "Aaaah!" because how can I adequately represent it all on my blog?

I have to give him props because Greg Abbott is like a one-man "I Love the Yeti" - he just makes all the various depictions himself.

You can browse through his flickr portfolio to see more, but here's a few direct links (with titles I completely made up):

-- Birthday card (part of a great series)
-- In outer space
-- Also in outer space
-- Being angry
-- Getting helped out
-- Hunching
-- Going about the day
-- Snowboarding
-- Enjoying muffins

Thank you Paul Hunt for the scoop!

Jeralds Yeti

Scott Jeralds has a long history in the animation field as a triple-threat: director, artist, and producer. He was involved in creating many of the Saturday morning cartoons I adored growing up (Pirates of Dark Water, Garfield, Muppet Babies, Histeria, to name a few). He's still at it too - working on modern Scooby Doo and The Secret Saturdays.

He also dabbles in comic books as a penciller, and I've noticed in the last couple of years, the yeti seems to end up pretty frequently on the other end of his pencil.

Take this Scooby Doo comic he pencilled. There's yeti on the cover, and I also hear the issue contains a special segment of "Velma's Monsters Of The World" with a spotlight on the Abominable One.

He did this cover for the 8th issue of the "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" comic entitled ""Batman versus the Yeti", which contains an army of yelping yetis (still looking for additional images of said yelping yetis as of press time).

He did the art for the Secret Saturdays comic "Vengeance of the Hibagon", which is about a very yeti-ish cryptid (previously blogged about here). Plus, he's the main director of the cartoon (and if you keep up with that show (or read my post about it), you know the Shocking Big News (spoilers!)).

Yep, Scott Jeralds probably loves the yeti.

Not Yeti Friday - A Smörgåsbord of Not Yetis

A robot yeti?... No, just a custom Bionicle monster. By Tekka Croe.

-----------

A yeti from He-Man: Masters of the Universe?... No, it's just Stratos, leader of a race of Bird People.

-----------

An olden-times yeti? No, just a weird WTF photo from Black and WTF.

-----------

And finally, via Cryptomundo: This is the new robotic Bigfoot toy coming out in June from Fisher-Price. It flips, stomps, and grimaces - and for no discernible reason comes with a red ball and plastic leaf. Watch out, this might end up being as huge as Tickle Me Elmo. It really should be posted on a Bigfoot site as a "Not Bigfoot". Look at it. Loren Coleman writes: "It would seem the forthcoming Winter Olympics’ Quatchi may be more accurate [to actual reports of Sasquatch from the Pacific Northwest forests] than this fella." I agree and take it a step further: This fella isn't even accurate to non-zoological popular culture conceptions of Bigfoot. He looks like a regular cartoon human with a big mouth, bushy eyebrows, tusks, no neck, wearing a brown superhero suit. Calling it "My Little Weird Half-Ogre" would have been better.

Have a good weekend!

Yeti promotes snow tubing

This is from a short video by deviantmonk you might like. It features Steve. He's a yeti. He explains how he is just like a snowman, but with a few minor differences. He's endorsing a Totally Tubular Retreat. The design is good, and the ad is cute. I give kudos as that is how I roll.

It goes along with this postcard.

Sullivan Yeti

I like the minimalism. Available as a 10 dollar print. Brought to you by DP Sullivan, who did a whole alphabet of random things. From Afros to Zeus (see all of them here).

My personal favorite thing of his is his angry mob.

NOT ACTUALLY AN EMBEDDED MOVIE!!

The above is a screenshot from 17 seconds in on the teaser trailer for Glitch, a web-based multiplayer game coming Fall 2010. It's by Steward Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr, and is getting a lot of buzz. You heard it here first that it has a yeti.

Not Yeti Friday - a Ghillie Suit

The headline of the article with this picture is: "It's not a Yeti".

Nope. Not even a Green one.

It is a ghillie suit.

It may surprise you to know it is also called a yowie suit, probably by people in Australia. A yowie is like an Australian yeti.
