Viva la Yeti Crab!

In March of 2005, kiwa hirsuta was discovered in the South Pacific Ocean. The marine scientists responsible immediately nicknamed it the yeti crab.

Besides a photo or two and a single grainy, rarely-seen video, nothing else has happened. Some people blogged about it the month it was discovered, saying things like "WHOAH!" and "WHAT A WEIRD ANIMAL!" and "I WONDER WHAT ONE WOULD TASTE LIKE!", but other than that, there has been little fanfare. The world has been mysteriously silent on the subject of the yeti crab. Have people forgotten?

It is my honor and pleasure to rectify this situation. I periodically sift through the W.W.W. to collect for you here the examples of the kiwa hirsuta's impact on popular culture. Here is everything noteworthy I could find about this truly amazing REAL LIVE creature since my last update:

Kristen McQuillin crafted one, then Mandy Jouan. And now Zoe (the unicorn) Alexander (aka inner-etch on deviantart) has done it as well! Her skills have produced a fabulous plush representation worthy of the Ages. These three women should be commended for their artistry and pioneering choice of subject matter.

Wanting to design a fake Pokemon character, fuzzball288 on deviantart was inspired by the one-and-only yeti crab to conceive the above
cartoon.

Curster made a designer toy of the non-crab yeti which I've blogged about before. And unless it's a complete coincidence, they decided to honor the kiwa hirsuta with a yeti crab version! Way to go, Curster.

CONGRATULATIONS to the artists and designers. Together we can keep this exciting cryptozoological event in our hearts and minds.

WELCOME to the KNOWN ANIMAL WORLD, Mrs. Hirsuta.

700th Post!

This is the 700th post to this blog.

I have given the honor to the artist devil-cake for her piece entitled The Nice Yeti.

The artist's comment:

"Not all yetis are mean.
Sometimes they'll give you ice cream and be your friend.
But most of the time, they'll just want to eat you."

So true, devil-cake. So true.

To everyone: Thank you for reading and sharing the yeti love with me.

Alton Towers Yeti

A family visited the popular Alton Towers theme park in Staffordshire, England and encountered this costumed Abominable Snowman.

Anyone been to Alton Towers? Have you seen their yeti? Does it frequent a particular section of the park? Forbidden Valley? Ug Land? Adventure Land?

Yeti vs. Cyborg

I was in the mood for a "versus", which, for those of you who don't know, is an image that depicts yeti in contention (usually of a violent nature) with some other entity.

And then Lo! I encountered this piece of fine art from Geordan Moore (aka who_stole_my_bike on flickr).

Yeti is putting the magic halt on that cyborg.

Yes, you heard me, yeti can put on the magic halt.

Watch for that.

We Have Another Winner!

Grace Alvord sent me the link to her exceedingly excellent 2008 Halloween costume. You can see more pictures of it on her flickr page!

Please take note that she has provided the following caption for one of the images: "Snaauurr".

Long-time readers of this blog may know the snnaaaaurrgnificance of this.

Not Yeti Friday - Super-Intelligent Ambassadors from Gorilla City

A reader from France, Damien M, whose nickname is "The Yeti" sent me the link to the above scan from a Wonder Woman comic book. It was originally posted by tikigod to the user-submitted image discussion blog My[confined]Space.

Click to zoom in. You will notice they are not yeti at all, but rather Super-Intelligent Ambassadors from Gorilla City (or SIAFGC's). What can we learn from this comic?

1. The SIAFGC's are most handsome.
2. But not at all modest.
3. Diana is way into them.
4. This is not reciprocated. In fact, Diana tastes unpleasant to them.
5. SIAFGC's apparently taste people.
5. For no discernable reason, someone's thoughts are interrupting the proceedings.
6. A part of the void of the Black Horizon, whatever that is, lingers within this unknown, still incomplete person.

This isn't the first time I've mentioned those handsome, hand-tasting super-intelligent gorillas from Gorilla City. See here for my earlier post.

Thanks, Damien M!

Four things that go great together

SirMitchell of Etsy joins the ranks of the most wise and forthright among us who dare to make yeti the subject of their art and t-shirt designs.

This one illustrates "a yeti, a unicorn, a moped, and the open road...".

Sir Mitchell has our admiration and our hearts. And look closely to see a tie fighter decal on the moped. Bless you, SirM, bless you.

Not Yeti Friday - Bigfoot Walking His Dog

A reader named Spencer has been sending me some excellent yeti links.

He sent me a link to this great t-shirt. It looks like yeti, but it's actually based on an original painting by Christopher Bonnette aka macula which depicts Bigfoot nervously walking his dachsund, which he originally posted to his blog:

Macula is a bona fide yeti lover. He made this paper toy and has done some great concept art. For all of his yeti lovin', go here!

I don't know about you, but I think there should be more imagery depicting yeti and their dogs. There is a great dearth of such things.

Thanks, Spencer!

Etsy artist ittichips made this painting.

I commend the artist for his excellent decision to give the yeti a hat.

Biggest Yeti News

Gama-Go put on sale their big yeti figurine! It got huge Internet exposure and sold out within a day or two.

Wish I'd had an extra $100 around to afford this bad boy. Very rad.

Heaps Yeti

Joe Heaps Nelson drew "Yeti Crocker" a couple years ago. Fuse Gallery, NYC has put it on tour with the "Draw" exhibit.

He also did another piece, which was a collage, about yetis wanting to dye their hair blond.
