This Martha Sawyers illustration's from the '60s is an interesting depiction. Definitely bear-like.  Or maybe a giant sloth. Anyway, it didn't catch on, but I like it.

Winner of the Biggest Thing to Happen to Yeti...

The biggest thing to happen to yeti in popular culture in recent times is the new Mummy movie. It's the first time a yeti has appeared in a major live-action film (and a summer tentpole picture to boot).

Many reviews cite the yetis as the only redeeming feature of the film. Perhaps this will encourage other filmmakers to include Abominable Snowmen in their cast.


Here's a close-up look at this important yeti.

Note that it is really more bear-like than ape-like.

Not Yeti Friday - Druid: Werebear & Warden Archon

A person called ShadowButcher has compiled an archive of concept art from the PC game, Diablo II.

The above image of of a "Druid: Werebear".

Turns out the designers didn't run with this particular concept art, making their were-bears in the actual game look decidedly un-yeti-ish. Thusly, I proclaim it NOT YETI.

I found a guide online that explains how to make a druid character in Diablo II that can turn into a were-bear. Proud of me?

The Book of Exalted Deeds is a D&D guide to things that are good (...good as in the alignment - as in NOT EVIL).

The book introduces the "Warden Archon", depicted above by Mark Nelson. It looks like an armored were-bear. Or possibly an armored yeti if you squint your eyes. It is apparently a very good and very powerful creature that guards things.

Verdict: NOT YETI.

I have done my service to my country today.



Note: I tried looking for more images of were-bears, but one on such a quest gets quickly into Furry territory, and no offense to Furries, but that's just not my thing.

I Love Red Pandas

Red Pandas are the best!

Like the yeti, they are native to the Himalayas.

Also, according to Wikipedia:

"If a Red Panda feels threatened or senses danger, it will often try to scamper up into an inaccessible rock column or a tree. If they can no longer flee, they stand up on their hind legs, which makes them appear somewhat more daunting and... allows them... [to use] the razor-sharp claws on their front paws, which can inflict substantial wounds. Red Pandas are friendly, but are not helpless, and will resist if they feel threatened."

Update on the Were-Bear Truth

I stand corrected. Apparently, there are "were-apes" in the popular culture. They go by the technical name megapithicanthropes, and you can read more about them here.



What does this have to do with the Great Were-Bear Explanation? Nothing. These megapithicanthsdkfls whatever-things are not yeti. Why not? Take your pick:

Because that doesn't make any sense.

Because yeti does not have a tail, and these megapithies do.

Satisfied? Viva la Were-bears.

Yeti's True Form Revealed

There are two competing ideas about yeti's true form, or if you prefer, the physical representation it projects into

the physical realm (for you projection-theorists out there).

They are:

Yeti is a bear, nothing more.

Yeti is a "hominid" or some kind of man-like being, but certainly not a bear.

Which one is correct? The Answer, my friends, has been so obvious all along, and I am so pleased to finally put an end to the eternal raging conflict between these two contending factions! For BOTH are correct! But how?, you ask (understandably). How can this be?

One word answer: were-bears.



Yes, were-bears... polar were-bears to be precise.



You've heard of were-wolves? Same thing, except now bears. Why not "were-apes"? No such thing. Seriously. Google it, you'll see. No were-apes to be found. (UPDATE!) But plenty of were-bears.



In the above comic strip, a turtle ninja battles something. Is it yeti or a large polar bear/man hybrid? What if I were to tell you that they were one and the same? What would you say to that?

Well, you'd probably say: "Yes, I know. You've explained already about how they're the same, so I'm not surprised. You're just repeating yourself."

Then, um... Yeah! Excellent. ...Were-bears.
