Monday's Troll by Jack Prelutsky and Peter Sis (1996) ...

Has this poem and illustration:

A SOLITARY YETI

I'm a solitary yeti,
Traversing frozen plains,
Upon a constant lookout
For dinosaur remains.

I savor them for supper,
I relish them for lunch,
Their flavor is peculiar,
But I adore the crunch.

The Yeti Doesn't Appreciate Being Called Bigfoot

I writer/illustrator Adam Rex.

Look at this yeti he did, and this one.

In his picture book, Frankenstein Makes A Sandwich:

He has a page about the Yeti (click image below to view bigger & read poem):

And he has a page about Bigfoot (click image below to view bigger & read poem):

I get asked a lot on this blog what the difference is between the two:

----"How is a Bigfoot not a yeti?"

----"Why don't you feature a well-known beef jerky commercial?"

----"Hey, you forgot Harry and the Hendersons!"

Many people think that Bigfoot is just a type of yeti, or yeti is a type of sasquatch.

Thank you, Adam Rex, for showing us how the Yeti and Bigfoot are emotionally affected by this common misconception.

In the sequel, Frankenstein Takes the Cake, one can assume by their cameo that the two have resolved their differences. They appear to be conversing amiably at a wedding:

That's a screaming flower girl interrupting them, btw. You'll have to buy the book and read it to find out more.

The Yeti by High On Fire

Beyond the mountains of ice
Exists a creature of frost
His secret lies in the skies
Eternal legend survives

His powers unknown by man
To catch a glimpse if he can
Wandering deep polar caps
Communication with saucer

Abominable nomad
The ancient monks know his clan
The time of yeti will rise
Because his ways have been wise

The yeti's feet take flight, upon the tundran ice
Carries the saucer's key, upon the space bound seed

The yeti's feet take flight, upon the tundran ice
Carries the saucer's key, upon the space bound seed

Yeti Anagrams

I discovered that Abominable Snowman is an anagram for... (click here to find out)!

But what other anagrams exist? I found four online.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Type II Diabetes
             =
I eat yeti bipeds.
by Judson T. Pewther
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Is it the abominable snowman?
                          =
White baboon? Last simian men?

by Tom Myers

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leicester City
             =
Electric Yetis
by Unknown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I Got You, Babe
             =
Yeti Bugaboo

by Roy R. Pryor

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And the word 'yetis' by itself has two anagrams:
seity: A quality peculiar to oneself.
yites: European yellow-hammers (birds)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman inspired this post when I read on his blog about a famous anagram controversy involving another cryptid - The Loch Ness Monster.

In a cryptozoology news round-up in the last week of November 2006, Coleman discusses Sir Peter Scott, a well-known British ornithologist, conservationist, painter, and later in life, a supporter of the search for the Loch Ness Monster:

"After several successful 1970s photographic and sonar findings by the Academy of Applied Sciences, Sir Peter announced in 1975 that the scientific name of the monster would henceforth be Nessiteras rhombopteryx, which is Greek for 'The Ness monster with diamond-shaped fin.' This allegedly enabled Nessie to be added to a British register of officially protected wildlife, although that is disputed today. Ridicule followed quickly when London newspapers noted that Nessiteras rhombopteryx is an anagram of "monster hoax by Sir Peter S." Nessie searcher and cryptozoologist Robert H. Rines replied that the letters could also be rearranged to spell: 'Yes, both pix are monsters–R.'"

To recap:

Nessiteras rhombopteryx
                       =
Monster Hoax by Sir Peter S.
                       =
Yes, both pix are monsters. – R.

I love it!

    Frauke vs. Yeti

    Frauke is the experimental / death metal / german pop group that hails from Germany. It is made up of three members, all named Frauke, who all play the guitar, drums, and provide the necessary vocals. Here is an illustration of them fighting yeti (click for an engorged version):

    I have been in correspondence with Frauke. And I happily quote:

    We are Frauke. One of our members - her name is also Frauke - had a romantic relationship with the Yeti. Then she found out that the Yeti was cheating on her. So she had a romantic camping date, but then set the Yeti on fire with a flaming marshmallow. Since then, she has devoted her time to conjuring up strategems that will allow us to successfully kill more of the Yetis. One of them is where we ask the Yeti to go hunting with us. The Yeti, being small minded, say yes. And then we tell the Yeti to "wait right here, because we will be right back." The Yeti does this because the Yeti is stupid. So then we surround and shoot the Yeti many times and we high-five the sherpas.

    Frauke has also sent me the link to their myspace page and to the song where Frauke tells the joke, and here that is:

    Thank you to Frauke.

    Poetry is the music of the yeti

    Multi-talented "I Love the Yeti" reader, Vera, has graciously permitted my posting of two of her yeti poems for the enlightenment of the public.

    I wish I were a Yeti

    I wish I were a Yeti
    Somewhere in the mountains
    A Yeti on a journey with his father
    Who reads Lermontov to him, at night.
    A Yeti lying awake at night,
    With glowing eyes,
    Outside, under the stars,
    Somewhere in the mountains,
    And wishing to be a Phoenician
    Or a satrap of Alexander the Great.
    Or some other impossible thing.

    Heady Yeti

    He is someone
    Silent and sincere,
    That, when in need
    Will fight for you and pray.
    Only when you have a Yeti,
    That laughs with you and cries,
    Only then could you say
    I have a Yeti,
    and it’s heady.

    a yeti poem for you

    By Wislawa Szymborska

    “Notes from a Nonexistent Himalayan Experience”

    So these are the Himalayas.
    Mountains racing to the moon.
    The moment of their start recorded
    on the startling, ripped canvas of the sky.
    Holes punched in a desert of clouds.
    Thrust into nothing.
    Echo–a white mute.
    Quiet.

    Yeti, down there we’ve got Wednesday,
    bread and alphabets.
    Two times two is four.
    Roses are red there,
    and violets are blue.

    Yeti, crime is not all
    we’re up to down there.
    Yeti, not every sentence there
    means death.

    We’ve inherited hope–
    the gift of forgetting.
    You’ll see how we give
    birth among the ruins.

    Yeti, we’ve got Shakespeare there.
    Yeti, we play solitaire
    and violin. At nightfall,
    we turn lights on, Yeti.

    Up here it’s neither moon nor earth.
    Tears freeze.
    Oh Yeti, semi-moonman,
    turn back, think again!

    I called this to the Yeti
    inside four walls of avalanche,
    stomping my feet for warmth
    on the everlasting
    snow.

    Nash-ional Treasure

    Who doesn't like Ogden Nash? Send their names to me and I will protect those people from village mobs.

    Like it or not (...I like!), Mr. Nash wrote a poem about the Abominable Snowman!

    Yeti Kernels

  • Teddy Roosevelt wrote about seeing a YETI

  • Ogden Nash wrote a great poem about Wendigo:

    The wendigo, the wendigo!
    Its eyes are ice and indigo!
    Its blood is rank and yellowish!
    Its voice is hoarse and bellowish!
    Its tentacles are slithery,
    And scummy, slimy, leathery!
    Its lips are hungry blubbery,
    And smacky, sucky, rubbery!

    The wendigo, the wendigo!
    I saw it just a friend ago!
    Last night it lurked in canada,
    Tonight, on your veranada!
    As you are lolling hammockwise,
    It contemplates you stomachwise.
    You loll,
    It contemplates,
    It lollops,
    The rest is merely gulps and gollops!

  • Yeti T-shirt

  • Yeti painting by this guy.

  • And one here.

  • Yeti in Spanish: El Yeti

  • Yeti is an entry in the Church of the Subgenius' Dictionary of the Gods

    Yeti
    AKA Gigantanthropus correctus, Sismite, Almas, Dzu-Teh, Dida, Mapinquary, Mi-Go, Mangani, Abominable Snowmen, Sasquatches, Bigfeet

    Huge, luxuriously furred creatures created by the Xists to serve the Elder Gods. They created humans in order to generate pain and suffering for the Elder Gods to feed off of. Their great city of Mutantis was destroyed millions of years ago when two Yeti were copulating too near the Great Crystal that powered their city. SubGenii (or Yetinsyny) are the half-breed descendants of the Yeti and the humans.

    Hey Henry,

    Here are some lyrics to songs about the Yeti. The first is by "stoner metal" band High On Fire, from their 2002 album Surrounded by Thieves; it's very, very heavy and I don't think you'd really appreciate the song itself but I thought I should pass along the lyrics anyway. They seem to suggest that the yeti has some connection to extraterrestrial life; I confess that I don't know if this theme has yet been suggested or explored by others, beyond certain yeti-style aliens on Dr. Who and whatnot. So anyway, here they are:

    The Yeti [Ballad of]

    Beyond the mountains of ice,
    Exists a creature of frost.
    His secret lies in the skies.
    Eternal legend survives.
    His powers unknown by man.
    To catch a glimpse if he can.
    Wandering deep polar caps.
    Communication with saucer.
    Abominable nomad.
    The ancient monks know his clan.
    The time of yeti will rise.
    Because his ways have always been wise.
    The yeti's feet take fight,
    Upon the tundran ice.
    Carries the saucer's key,
    Upon the space-bound seed.

    And if you prefer Yeti songs that offer a more clear-eyed, down-to earth perspective, there's Jonathan Richman's "Abominable Snowman in the Market," of which you may already be aware. I think that there's a good chance you'll like this one a lot if you've never heard it.

    Abominable Snowman in the Market

    Well look, see, there's an abominable snowman in the supermarket
    And apparently the housewives have never seen anything like that before
    Hear the housewives complaing to the manager,
    "Get that snow thing out of this store."

    Abominable snowman in the market,
    That's right, you heard me right, gang.
    And the housewives, they all remarking,
    "Looks like a dirty marshmallow with fangs."

    Well, there's an abominable snowman in the market,
    Now he's down by the peas and carrots.
    Abominable snowman in the market.
    And they cannot chase him away.

    Abominable snowman in the market.
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    Abominable snowman in the market.
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

    See, there's an abominable snowman in the market,
    And the situation is grave.
    Well, the housewives hurt and confuse him,
    And I can't see him treated this way.

    Well, there's an abominable snowman in the market,
    And I think he's a real nice guy.
    I like the snowman, I want to help him out,
    I don't want to see him hurt this way.

    Well, Abominable snowman in the market.
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    Abominable snowman in the market.
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

    Look, we have to talk to this abominable snowman man.
    And we have to say something that he can understand.

    There's an abominable snowman in the market,
    And he's doin' better every day.
    I know it's helped him to have a more tolerant feeling.
    And I like to see him treated this way.

    Well, there's an abominable snowman in the market,
    And he's down by the peas and carrots.
    There's an abominable snowman in the market,
    And that is what I now say.

    Abominable snowman in the market,
    all right Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    Abominable snowman in the market
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

    There's an abominable snowman in the market
    Down by the peas and carrots.
    Abominable snowman in the market
    He just arrived by plane yesterday.

    There's an abominable snowman in the market
    And the housewives never seen something like that before.
    Housewives treat him like a stranger,
    They want him away from the supermark't door.

    Abominable snowman in the market.
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    Abominable snowman in the market

    -- Sean
