Not Yeti Friday - Althin's Felix

There's a great art piece that recently hit the world and is generating buzz. It's a giant sculpture by artist Eric Althin and puppet/creature maker Tamara Marke-Lares. Exhibiting at Bold Hype gallery in Orlando Florida, it's called Felix.



Hi-Fructose Magazine took many pictures, shared the original sketch, and interviewed Althin. He had this to say:

"As far as what he is... a lot of people are calling him a yeti, but that's not quite accurate. I'd imagine Yetis to be related to apes in some way, where as Felix's evolutionary ladder would reveal his closest relative to be the polar bear."

I don't want to argue that Felix is a yeti (that's entirely up to Althin), but I can't help take issue with the idea that it is inaccurate to say he looks like one. I've looked at thousands and thousands of yeti depictions over the years, and I can state unequivocally that... Dude Look Like a Yeti. The popular culture has been making yeti more ablobinable over the years. Most images of him these days show him as a white blob with eyes. He's basically a Halloween ghost with broad shoulders and claws.

Anyway, I love the sculpture, yeti or not. Rock on, Althin.

Pipecleaner Yeti

The talented Chenille Macabre makes monstrous things out of pipecleaners.

From the etsy page:

"The Yeti Mini stands 2" (5.908 cm) high. His body is completely comprised of pipe cleaners. He has been brushed with a glitter acrylic to make his fur sparkle like ice, and he is quite poseable!"

Wampa News is Yeti News

As far as I'm concerned the Wampa is a yeti. Deal with it, sticklers!



Super-reader Spencer M. gives the heads-up:

"I wanted to let you know that the Star Wars Wampa (Star Wars Yeti) will be coming soon to stores in the Mighty Muggs line of toys. It even comes with a bone and some meat on it!"

Is this so he can more easily do bloodpainting?

Dunny/Munny Yeti

A "dunny", according to its wikipedia entry, is a kind of vinyl designer toy (created by Paul Budnitz and Tristan Eaton & produced by Kidrobot circa 2004 onwards), which resembles a rabbit with tubular ears.

Direct quote: "With the success of vinyl toys as a medium for expression, many fans and artists have put their own design onto the dunny, known as 'customizing'."

And many artists have customized the dunny to look like the yeti. Here is one example:

A "munny", according to its wikipedia entry, is intended from the start to be a customizable "Do-it-Yourself" type action figure.

My own investigations revealed this is the work of French artist Tougui. When you visit his blog, you will see a lot of yeti love. He has another (friendlier) papercraft yeti, more illustrations, some deck designs, and even a yeti crab(?).

cronobreaker Yeti

Super-reader Spencer M. spotted the above character on Mojizu.

It reminded me of a recent post featuring an older yeti and a unicorn companion (by artist Mike Mitchell), also riding a scooter with skull apparel. I am tagging both posts with a new label, "Scooters", since I am sensing a new trend.

Who is the artist behind the above? His name is Scott™ or "cronobreaker" on deviantart.

A quick look at his portfolio reveals another excellent yeti illustration. It reminds us that the same thing happens to all of us, even the yeti, when we drink the slurpee too fast:

Not Yeti Friday - Bigfoot Walking His Dog

A reader named Spencer has been sending me some excellent yeti links.

He sent me a link to this great t-shirt. It looks like yeti, but it's actually based on an original painting by Christopher Bonnette aka macula which depicts Bigfoot nervously walking his dachsund, which he originally posted to his blog:



Macula is a bona fide yeti lover. He made this paper toy and has done some great concept art. For all of his yeti lovin', go here!

I don't know about you, but I think there should be more imagery depicting yeti and their dogs. There is a great dearth of such things.
