Journey with me to China to observe a monster from the 1964 Cantonese film: Buddha’s Palm.

I believe this is the the first recorded instance of a Yeticorn!

It predates the Mugato by 4 years. Note: I don't count the 1936 Flash Gordon's Orangapoid, which isn't yeti-ish enough.

Did you know?  The Buddha's Palm yeticorn can spit lasers that instantly skeletonize its target. And for that, I must tip my hat!

Aztec Wars (1999) - obscure PC game from Russia featuring an alternate reality with Aztecs conquering the world. The Chinese armies in the game employ yellow yetis.  Phew, this was a tough one to track down a screenshot. *Pats self on back*

Arcane Legions Yeti

Arcane Legions is a table-top miniature wargame.


One of the armies you can play is the Han Dynasty, which has a Chinese culture theme.



The Yeti are a character in the game. Here's what the yeti ultimately looks like as a figure:


This isn't the first time that yeti has been associated with Chinese culture as a kind of representative - where someone said, "China?", and the answer was: "Yeti!".

The two examples that leap to mind are:

* The film The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
* DC Comics' The Great Ten

I wonder if people from Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, etc. mind?

After all, the Chinese have their own yeti: The Yeren!

The Great Ten's Yeti

I found this "micro-hero" from here, where yeti appears to be the member of a superhero team called China's Great Ten. What comic book is that from?

Turns out it's from DC's 52.

The Great Ten is what a superhero team might be like if sponsored by the government of the People's Republic of China. A roll call reveals some fantastic names, many as if they were literally translated from the Chinese: Accomplished Perfect Physician, August General in Iron, Socialist Red Guardsman, Mother of Champions, Ghost Fox Killer, Celestial Archer, Immortal Man in Darkness, Seven Deadly Brothers, Thundermind, and Shaolin Robot.

The Yeti is a reserve member of the team. A genetic scientist named Hu Wei unlocked a gene that can turn people into monsters. After self-experimenting, he can now "hulk" out as a yeti. Unfortunately, he's filled with rage when he yetis out and has to wear a kind of electro-amulet to keep from killing everybody. Sadly, Hu Wei was killed by supervillain Black Adam in issue # 50.



It's not a huge loss for the Great Ten, IMHO, since at least once before, Hu Wei discarded the amulet for some crazy reason and went on a rampage, killing 30 people. The Accomplished Perfect Physician had to go stop him and make him put his amulet back on. He was something of a liability, I figure.

Just wear the amulet, yeti! Is it that hard?

The cult classic movie Big Trouble in Little China has a yeti of sorts in the cast. It is known colloquially as "Chinese Wild Man" in the film, but hairy hominid enthusiasts know its other name: "yeren".

The folks at eightball studios made a nice action figure of it.

The Chinese Wildman

The Yeren is the Chinese Wildman. According to Chinese folklore, it eats people. But here's the odd part: after grabbing people so they can't move, it faints with mirth. Yes, you heard right, it faints with mirth. Remarkably, the Yeren does not lose its hold on its victims when it faints. However! It will wake up eventually and then eat you. But! If you wear bamboo as your sleeves, you'll be able to slip out of them when the Yeren is in its swoon and then make your escape. Otherwise when it wakes up from its mirthful slumber, you will be eaten. Something to think about.
